Fire, Decision, and Memory: An Intellectual Architecture
Identity
Fire & Memory is a research and editorial platform devoted to decision and action under pressure — in the face of risk as in the face of the test. Born of the world of fire and civil protection, which remains its core, it derives from that world a method: to formalize how organizations and individuals reason, decide, and hold firm when conditions are imperfect. It brings together the entire body of Nicolas Folio’s work and ensures coherence among operational experience, historical rigor, and decision analysis.
Positioning
Fire & Memory builds a coherent corpus, distinguished by:
- A demand for method: lived operational experience does not, on its own, constitute a doctrine; it must stand up to analysis.
- A critical approach to history: the past is treated as a tool for understanding the mechanisms of civil protection, not as an object of commemoration.
- A refusal of the recipe: whether commanding in the field or holding one’s own in an examination, method is inseparable from real constraints and never reduces to a template to be recited.
The house publishes:
- Works of doctrine for officers and decision-makers.
- Method books for the preparation of public-service competitive examinations.
- Historical narratives (narrative non-fiction) grounded in primary sources.
- Biographies conceived as objects of social analysis.
Publishing structures
Fire & Memory orchestrates the intellectual production; publishing is carried out by three structures suited to the nature of each work:
- Fire & Memory Editions: the imprint for international research programs (Comparative Fire History) and narrative non-fiction. Trilingual publications (French, English, German), across Europe and North America.
- Les Éditions de la Méthode: the structure dedicated to doctrine, method, and intellectual tooling — from the officer and the decision-maker to the candidate preparing for an examination.
- Associative & Partnership Publications: biographical and commemorative works carried by the institutions that safeguard heritage (fraternal associations, veterans’ associations, museums).
The Author
Nicolas Folio combines operational experience with a research practice: a fire-service officer and a former member of the Paris Fire Brigade (Brigade de sapeurs-pompiers de Paris), he is conducting doctoral research in history at the Centre de recherches pluridisciplinaires multilingues (CRPM), Université Paris Nanterre. Within this ecosystem, he is the research operator; the Fire & Memory site guarantees the unity of the corpus beyond the diversity of its publishers.
